How we’re preparing students to enter the workforce
Our career readiness interventions are focused in two areas: expanding online career modules and improving career coaching throughout the university.See our results and impacts
Exploration. Development. Graduation. Employment. These are vital areas for preparing college graduates for the workforce.
IU Career EDGE is a series of online modules in Canvas that can be embedded in courses or other organized activities and used by instructors and academic and career advisors to support students. The modules walk students through career exploration, job search strategies, accepting job offers and applying to graduate or professional schools.
The Charting the Future (CtF) project’s goal is to revise and expand use of EDGE modules throughout IU classes and programs. A closely related project initiative is an effort to adapt the modules for use in high schools as part of the project’s K–12 collaborations.
Initial specific project activities include:
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers often rate employability skills as equal to or more important than technical skills alone. Career coaching teaches students these types of skills as they work toward their goals.
At the heart of Charting the Future’s career readiness interventions is a coaching approach that prepares students to use new network platforms that connect employers with college graduates. We’re also working to help local employers join the network.
Indiana University uses the Handshake platform as a one-stop resource for jobs and career events, for both students and employers. We’ll help integrate the ongoing transition of IU’s career services and systems with EDGE module development.
Charting the Future is partnering with Ascend Indiana, which helps connect Indiana employers with talent that matches their job postings. We’re working with them to define skill pathways and guide students into and through them to relevant jobs. We’re learning their model and helping to adapt it for use across the state.
